Abstract

This study aims to identify the hindrances to online education students in schools and colleges during the lockdown. The online survey through Google Forms with a structured questionnaire with both restricted and unrestricted responses was designed to identify the hindrance to online education during the third lockdown. Total of 425 responses of students who attend online classes during lockdown from Phuentsholing Higher Secondary, Phuentsholing Middle Secondary, Sonamgang Middle Secondary Schools, and College of Science and Technology in Phuentsholing, Bhutan. The result indicates that socio-economic, technological, and psychological situations hinder effective online teaching and learning. Household chores, large family members, data packages, and poor internet connectivity are other difficulties students face making online education ineffective. Some of the measures to support economically disadvantaged students and provide personal computers/laptops to teachers for preparing and developing teaching-learning materials are suggested. Other recommendations and viable measures based on surveys are suggested to overcome such challenges for students and support providers to make online education effective and focused

Sumitra Pokhrel is a teacher at Phuentsholing Higher Secondary School, Ministry of Education, Bhutan. She teaches Geography and Economics for higher secondary classes.  She has M.Sc. in Geography from Andhra University, Vishakhapatnam, Post Graduate Certificate in Education from Samtse College of Education, Royal University of Bhutan (RUB), and Bachelor in Arts Geography (Hons) from Sherubtse College (RUB), Bhutan. 

She is a member of the Subject Committee for geography at Royal Education Council (REC) and is involved in curriculum development and reforms with REC. She is also a member of textbook writer for Geography for classes VII to X (REC), Ministry of Education, Bhutan. She was a panel member for the Validation of the M. Ed in Geography program and Post Graduate Diploma in Education program for Royal University of Bhutan (RUB).

Roshan Chhetri is an Assistant Professor with 30 years of experience at the College of Science and Technology (CST), Royal University of Bhutan. He studied in REC (NIT) Warangal, India, and the University of New Brunswick, Canada. He has published and presented more than 25 papers in journals and conferences. Roshan is a recipient of the National Award of Merit (Gold) for Long Tenure in Academic in Dec 2013 and the National Award of Merit (Gold) for Excellence in Academic in Dec 2014 from His Majesty the King of Bhutan. He is also a recipient of the Endeavour Executive Fellowship Awards, Australia.

Roshan was a coordinator for (i) Interweave project (Erasmus Mundus), and (ii) University- Business Partnership program for Analysis and Modelling of Bhutan’s Hydropower Plants & Allied Activities funded by DAAD, German Academic Exchange. Presently he is the coordinator for the “EU-Asia Collaboration for aCcessible Education in Smart Power Systems (eACCESS) project and Erasmus +KA107 with the University of Valencia.

He was an invited speaker for Renewable Energy: The Main Source of Energy in Bhutan at AFORE2017, Busan, South Korea. He was President of IEEE Bhutan-Subsection in 2019.  He is Chairperson for the Electrical and Electronics Technical Committee, Bhutan Standards Bureau, Thimphu since September 2011, and President for Bhutan's National Electrotechnical Committee (NEC) since February 2013.
